K2 Mountain is the second highest mountain peak in the world and the highest peak in Pakistan. The sky-scraping mountain is also known as “Savage Mountain”, “Mount Godwin-Austen”, “Choogri” and “Mount Qogir”. It is located on the border between Baltistan in Gilgit-Baltistan region of Pakistan and Taxkorgan Tajik Autonomous Country of Xinjiang, China. Elevation of K2 is 8,611 meters( 28,251 ft).
K2 Mountain is called “Choogri” in local language. “Choogri” is a Balti word, which means “King of Mountains”. Mostly K2 is scaled from the trust worthy path that comes from Skardu. It is conventional path to scale the mountain and is used by most of mountaineers. The other path that comes from Chinese side is extremely difficult and hazardous.
The mountain was named “Savage Mountain” due to extreme difficulty of ascent and second highest fatality rate among “Eight Thousanders”. For every four people who reached the summit, one has died trying. In early days K2 witnessed many ascents and today the peak has been climbed from all sides.
In spite of extreme difficulty and hazards K2 presents; the adventure lovers from all over the world try to take new and diverse routes to conquer the mountain. K2 can be reached from the hilly town of Skardu which is well linked with Islamabad (the capital of Pakistan); both by road and air.
The K2 region of Pakistan is one of the most remote and mountainous places in the world. It is a vast desert of huge rock walls, glaciers and the some of the highest mountains in the world.
At 8611m, K2 is the second highest point on earth, and the world’s largest pyramid. It is the only mountain over 8,0000m high to retain it’s original surveyor’s symbol and was first climbed by an Italian expedition in 1954.The peak has now been climbed from almost all ridges. Demand to climb it from different, newly identified and difficult routes is on the increase. This is because the peak has yet to be climbed for as many times as its elder sister, the Everest. The local name of K2 is Chogori, which in Balti language means, The King of Mountains. This name is little known to the outside world. It is therefore desirable, that, the present name – K2 is used: It is, however, beneficient to popularize the local name which so succinctly conveys the hugeness of this gigantic mountain. K2 has variously been described as the “awesome”, “killer” and “savage” mountain. This is because of the massiveness of its size and some unsuccessful attempts, made upon it, by various expedition parties, including Americans who apperently have made quite a few attempts on it.
With respect to the commentary on the 1954 Italian expedition that was the first to summit K2, it has since been proven that Compagnoni and Lacedelli did indeed have oxygen until they reached the summit of K2. The myth was dispelled through libel proceedings brought on by climber Walter Bonatti, who had been accused of sabotaging the expedition by keeping the oxygen for himself. The best evidence available in translated format can be found in the latest edition of The Mountains of My Life by Bonatti, or the short book entitled Trial on K2.
